Website Development Costs- What to Expect

Let’s just say that you’ve hired the right person for the web development job and you want to set the ball rolling and have a website created for you.

But, as with any project, there is always going to be some money involved. In this article, I will go over the things that you can expect in terms of web development costs.

Payment Models

If you’ve hired a developer, the very first thing that needs to be talked about is the payment. Now, depending on the circumstances, if the web developer works remotely, you’re going to have to pay them based on what is required of them.

For instance, if they’re going to handle only a small portion of the web development process (which means that it is just a small project) and he/she is already a highly experienced developer, you’re going to have to pay them by the hour. The amount that you need to pay them depends on the individual, so it is best that you ask them early on.

For large projects that require a lot of time to work on, a fixed price can be considered. The same goes for small projects that are handled by inexperienced or junior web developers.

Some Rough Estimates

Website Development CostsAlthough the pricing for a web developer varies depending on a lot of factors, I can give you some rough estimates so that you will know what to expect.

Bear in mind that these are industry averages.

Here is what you can expect:

  • Front-End Developer$15-$150/hr (depending on experience)
  • Back-End Developer- $35-$150/hr (depending on experience)
  • Graphic Designer- $25-$120/hr

For website builders:

  • Joomla- $1500-$7000
  • WordPress- $3,000-$15000
  • Other Website Builders- $600-$2500 (some even have monthly pricing schemes)
  • E-Commerce- $3000-$20000

Bear in mind that these are just rough estimates, but it should give you a glimpse of the average pricing of every developer.

Experience

The developer’s experience, as well as all of the skills and knowledge that they’ve learned through the years, can heavily influence the pricing. For instance, a senior web developer (anyone who has worked in the industry for more than 10 years) will simply have a higher percentage of the pay compared to a junior developer.

Skill Set

Not all developers are equal. There are people who are willing to hone and sharpen their skills and there are some who are stubborn and refuse to adhere to new trends and standards.

Given their actual experience, it is also important to know a developer’s skill sets as well. Are they well-versed in the use of the different Javascript frameworks available? If so, which ones are they well-versed at?

Specialist VS Full-stack

Now, front-end and back-end developers are specialists and they have skills and knowledge that is way deeper in their chosen fields that full-stack developers.

Website Development CostsYou could say that full-stack developers are akin to the jack of all trades.

However, given that they just know the bare minimum and do not possess the deeper level stuff means that what they can offer is fairly limited, at least, when compared to bonafide front-end or back-end developers.
