“I regret that this matter has caused concern and unhappiness,” said Mr Hong in a statement to the media.
Come on, what kind of weasel apology is this. If you read Dilbert Adam’s “Way of the Weasel”, it was stated that one of the Weasel (or should we say fucked up) way of apologizing is not to apologize for what you have done, but for what others felt due to your actions.
In other words, instead of saying that “I’m sorry I broke your window”, a Weasel says “I’m sorry your window was unable to withstand the impact of the stone I threw at it”.
Last Sunday, the pastor also invited his congregation to pray for AWARE president Josie Lau and her husband, who stood next to Mr Hong on stage.
This Senior Pastor who supports the new Ex-Co to the core, I think he is just apologizing for the sake of it, to protect himself from the backlash his actions would have caused.

Hmm I think there’s a small but crucial error in the title of your post… Pastor Derek Hong did not apologise for “Supporting New AWARE Ex-Co”, he apologised for “using the pulpit to give backing to the Association of Women for Action and Research’s (AWARE) executive committee in their dispute with the group’s previous leadership.” (taken from his statement)
It seems similar but there IS a difference – it’s inaccurate to say he apologises for his support because obviously he DOES support them and does not regret it! He never apologised for his stand, because there’s nothing actually ‘wrong’ with “supporting new AWARE exco”. Everyone’s entitled to support who they want so his support doesn’t warrant an apology.
What he did apologise for was his misuse of the pulpit to get people to support the committee is the problem, and he did apologise for “his actions” and say he stands corrected.
He stepped out of line, but we have to give him credit for being humble enough to stand corrected and apologise. I believe it was sincere.
Oops typo in the 2nd-last paragraph. It should have been
What he did apologise for was his misuse of the pulpit to get people to support the committee. His actions, not beliefs, was the problem, and he did apologise for “his actions” and say he stands corrected.
